Mr Rees said: "If a brand new organization looks to relocate to the South West they will not consider Plymouth as the motorway ends at Exeter.



"Exeter includes a great train and airport hyperlink to London but Plymouth doesn't, so if we extend the M5 we'll make sure organization growth and as a result jobs within the city.



"There are far more people out of function in Plymouth than Exeter and that is considerably influenced through the travel infrastructure.



"At least this may permit the people in power in London to recognise there is a different city Links of London Charms inside the South West aside from Bristol and Exeter."



At present the M5 ends just south of Exeter with motorists choosing the A30 to Cornwall or the A38 Devon Expressway to Plymouth plus the A380 to Torbay.
